Survey About Expressive Therapy

THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER has been running a series of articles about expressive/arts therapies, beginning with our recent articles on hip hop and music. We will continue the series with articles on art therapy, dance/movement, and other therapies that use various arts.

So, it was of interest to me when I heard from a graduate student in the social work program at Bridgewater State College who is surveying social workers who have knowledge of and/or use expressive therapies in social work practice. Your participation in completing this survey is strictly anonymous and should take about 10 minutes to complete. You may opt out of the survey at any time. 1. Hi, my name is Hallie.
I'm a sophomore in highschool, and trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.
Social Work has been at the top of my list for a while now, however, my mother wants me to have "stability" with our waivering economy. More than anything, i just want to give back and help others. I'm not interested in having my own kids. I want to be a foster parent, and more than anything I love volunteering at homeless shelters. I just wanted to know... Is social work worth the lousy salary? Would you recommend someone go into this field? Any advice??

  2. Follow your heart, then everything you need will follow..."lousy" is a matter of opinion, in my opinion.

  3. You yourself said that you wanted to make more than 30,000 a year. Is social work worth all of the work? I understand this question is a matter of opinion, but what is yours?

  4. Yes, Hali, I believe it is worth the work, for me.

Perhaps you could talk with your guidance counselor or school social worker about this. They may be able to help you to learn more about the field, or to put you in touch with some social workers in your area so you could ask them questions about the field.

I wish you the best. I truly believe that Social Work will always be needed in our society, so there is job security in this knowledge.

I know Social Workers who make anywhere from $25,000 to $80,000. What I know is that I will be able to make a decent living, doing what I was meant to do. That's the important piece for me.
